Basketball Drills

Basketball drills are the life blood of your skills. Well to be more precise they’re the life blood of your practice and I don’t think I need to explain why that’s important.

But if do, it’s simple and you’ve probably heard it a hundred times; practice makes perfect (or near perfect). And yes it might be true, but you need to learn how to organize your practice to get the results you need. And that’s when basketball drills come into play.

You can always shoot around and hope to get better (and you might), but it’s not an effective way to practice. With drills you can spend much less time than you would with unorganized practice and get the same results. Not to mention they can often be pretty fun.

Throughout this section we’ll look at both offensive and defensive drills. So I recommend you look at the fundamentals section (includes shooting, dribbling, passing and rebounding). Even if you think you’ve got the basics down you should still take a look at it because you might have developed bad habits that you need to get rid of.

basketball drillsSome of the drills here involve more than just one person so if you can find someone who wants to help you, then please do so. Other things you might need include: a ball (which is practically used in all drills), a court (any flat hard surface will do), and a net.

Make sure the marking on the court (three point line, free throw line, the boundaries) are correct so that they match the court you actually play on (your league, school, ect). That’s why it might be important to find a court you can go play on, whether it be a public outdoor court or at a place like the YMCA.

When doing these drills, it might be smart to try different ones instead of sticking to just one drill. For example if I’m working on my shooting, I would pick three or four shooting drills and just alternate through them for the amount of time that I want to practice my shooting. Remember that you should warm up and stretch before each practice to avoid injury.

I hope you take our advise above before you start practicing. Watch for any new installments in this section. And that’s all, just remember that basketball drills are the lifeblood of your practice.
